Basajaun: The Last Frontier

Basajaun: The Last Frontier

Determination, grit, and months of preparation are essential for races of this calibre, yet surprises are always guaranteed in ultra-distance events. Basajaun race director Carlos Mazón offers a glimpse into this stunning and formidable race.

Words below from Carlos.

Basajaun 2024: The Birth of a new border for Transiberica

With experience in long-distance events, Transibérica was a pioneer in making the leap (in 2020 with Badlands) to long-distance races on off-road terrain, in a “gravel” concept, more within the reach of modern times.

Basajaun was born as a fresh and fun adventure, along the tracks and roads of the environment, inspired by the Basque myth of Basajaun, the lord of the forest, since along its route you cross different natural enclaves of relevance, always surrounded by Beeches, Oaks, Holm Oaks and Pines.

A unique race that combines speed, versatility and a more relaxed approach to gravel racing, providing a bit of culture from the environment and always prioritising the adventure of discovering remote places. Maintaining an “ultra” and competitive spirit, it takes participants to the limits of physical and mental endurance but focuses on the experience beyond the sporting challenge.

The route and terrain of the race

Basajaun takes the concept of adventure and extends it over 850 km, covering the vast majority of the route through forest paths and secondary roads. Although there are some sections of trail, even “cross-country,” where for a few hundred metres you have to carry the bike, it’s a price to be able to connect various remote environments.

The track crosses 7 provinces, 5 natural parks and various biosphere /natura 2000 reserves, allowing cyclists to cross unique landscapes and fully immerse themselves in nature.

The routes offer a unique challenge that requires not only speed and endurance, but also technical skills and strategic thinking. Riders must navigate across a variety of surfaces (loose gravel, dirt, sand, and even mud), making handling and bike adaptability crucial, as well as overtaking ability, and certain mechanical skills.

What most characterises the route is the diversity of environments. Although its destiny is the forest, it approaches decertified areas such as Bárdenas and the Sierras de Cameros / Demanda.

Key Features of the Basajaun

Distance: Ultra gravel races are marathon events, often exceeding 200 miles. Some of the more challenging races, like the Dirty Kanza XL, extend beyond 350 miles.

Basajaun goes one step further, with the premise of at least being an experience that lasts more than 48 hours, the route is about 800 km and 15,000m. The route is predetermined, however it requires certain expertise and GPS navigation skills on the part of the participants.

Terrain: The fields are predominantly unpaved and feature a combination of gravel roads, forest trails and forestry tracks. Cyclists encounter steep climbs, technical descents and unpredictable weather conditions, with a strong contrast between the lush humid forests of the Basque Country and the Pyrenees, with the more arid areas of Bardenas Reales.

Self-SufficiencyWe know that these are 100% self-sufficiency races. Participants must be self-sufficient and bring their own supplies and equipment. Support is minimal and riders should be prepared for mechanical problems, navigation challenges, and physical setbacks. However, in Basajaun it is allowed to share the route with other participants, thus generating a very united and passionate community. Unlike some competitive sports, where the approach can be intensely individualistic, the gravel community often emphasises camaraderie and mutual support. Stories of cyclists helping each other through difficult sections, sharing the suffering, or simply encouraging each other to overcome the challenge of completing the course are common.

This sense of community extends beyond the trials themselves. Events often include pre-race gatherings, post-race celebrations, and welcoming the last participants to complete the challenge.

Preparation and Training for Participants

Preparing for an ultra gravel race requires a holistic approach. Cyclists must develop not only their physical endurance but also their technical skills and mental resilience. Key components of the training include: Riders must balance the need for speed with the need for rest, as they navigate diverse and often hostile environments, testing their limits of physical and mental endurance.

Environmental and cultural impact

We have the opportunity and the possibility to show and share this beautiful land.

Basajaun is committed to minimising its environmental footprint and promoting sustainable tourism. The route is designed to respect the natural landscape and efforts are made to positively interact with local communities. Participants are encouraged to experience the rich cultural and culinary heritage of the regions they pass through, creating a deeper connection with the areas they travel through.

Ultra-distance races

One of our key objectives is to support and encourage more women to participate in ultra-distance races. Since Transibérica was born in 2018, we have seen a constant increase in female participation. To promote this trend, we have introduced initiatives such as women's camps (WWC), which provide training and support to cyclists of all levels and all nationalities.

By increasing visibility, addressing safety concerns and encouraging inclusivity, we hope to make ultra-cycling increasingly accessible and attractive to women.

Looking ahead

As the popularity of ultra gravel racing continues to grow, so does the innovation within the sport. New races are emerging around the world, each offering unique challenges and breathtaking landscapes. The sport's inclusivity and emphasis on personal achievement over competition attract a diverse range of participants, from elite athletes to weekend warriors.

In a world where many seek to push their boundaries and explore the unknown, ultra gravel racing stands out as the ultimate test of endurance, resilience, and adventure. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist looking for a new challenge or an endurance enthusiast drawn to the thrill of the race, ultra gravel racing offers an unparalleled journey through some of the most beautiful and demanding terrains on earth
